Based in Hingham, Massachusetts, designer Christa O'Leary blends timeless design with holistic wellness. Though based in MA, Christa's projects have spanned across South Carolina, Naples, FL and San Diego/LA. We sat down with Christa to take a peek into her design approach as the founder of Home and Harmony. With her psychology background, she approaches the industry from a new angle, with a special understanding of how a space can truly affect emotions and mood.
How would you describe your signature style?
I always say to clients, "my style doesn't matter when I'm doing somebody else's home." I am creating an environment to nurture and support them. That's the first thing. That being said, I tend to gravitate toward coastal, [being in Massachusetts.] I really like timeless - or something that is a new twist on timeless.
Do you have a favorite color/ palette to work with?
If I could design everything in blue, white, or pink I would. I just love blue and white, and it's probably because I have 4 children. They're all very active, they're all in sports, high energy. Blue is just a great color, and such a common color. I love the ocean, and we live in a coastal environment - we do a lot of coastal homes. But blue is also just such a soothing color.
How do you balance function/style?
I do keynotes and I discuss my framework called the Designer's Toolbox. This is another lens in the toolbox - assessing an environment through functionality. You can have an aesthetically beautiful space that isn't functional. Then, it depletes you and brings down your energy because you're frustrated when you're in that environment. It can be as beautiful as possible, but it's not nurturing to you. This is about taking the time to assess and create something even beyond functional, something that actually adds ease and grace into your life.
