How would you describe your signature style?
When my career first started, everything was very traditional. In the early 90s, I worked for James Howard in Jacksonville. Both Jacksonville and Tallahassee leaned more traditional. As far as personal style - I don't think I have a signature "Valerie" style. My personal style is really Eurocentric, antique, Asian inspired... it's funky.
I really try hard to make people's spaces timeless. It's about utilizing their ideas of what their style is. I tend to avoid trends if I can. I own lots of old real estate and am always renovating old homes. I'm the one who's pulling stuff out from 1960 and seeing what we can do with it. At the end of the day, it's really of a fluid combination of the client's vision and my artistic ability.
How does St. Augustine, FL affect your design style?
It makes a huge impact. We do a lot of second homes and vacation rentals. We can do that all day long. People tend to lean away from dark woods - although Tommy Bahama had a lot of that. When people come to St. Augustine, they're not wanting super traditional, dark woods, or botanical prints everywhere. We've done some of that, but it tends to be a more coastal aesthetic for sure.
What are your favorite types of projects to work on?
I like to decorate. I am a designer who loves to decorate. We do everything - I love the architectural aspects of space planning. I don't love making all the finished choices like the tile, flooring... But I love the bedding, the pillows, the rugs, the art. That's the most difficult part to explain to a client. It's all the little details, like what lamp will go with their bedding. It's about just trusting that we share the same vision. And then the end product is magical.
